Wake Forest Baptist researchers are leaders in the fields of cancer research, detection, prevention and treatment.

Live Webcast:  Radiofrequency Ablation of a Kidney Tumor

Breast Cancer Vaccine: A Clinical Trial

The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist is one of seven sites in the world participating in a clinical trial to evaluate an anti-cancer vaccine’s effectiveness in reducing the risk of breast cancer recurrence. WFUBMC oncology surgeon Dr. John Stewart discuses the methodology, risks, benefits and findings of the study.

Clinical trials are important to the advancement of treatments and medications used to improve prognosis and patient outcomes. Dr. Glenn Lesser of WFUBMC Hematology and Oncology presents an overview of cancer-related clinical trials, including recruitment, randomization, testing procedures, presentation of findings and application to practice.

Better Balance through Tai Chi

The Chinese exercise Tai Chi is well known for increasing strength and flexibility while providing deep relaxation. It is also an excellent way to improve balance in your body and in your life. Join Sandy Seeber and Alan Graham of Three Treasures Tai Chi for this introductory session.

11 am Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for support.

Ovarian cancer and other malignancies of the female reproductive system can cause confusion and stress for patients and their families. WFUBMC gynecologic oncologist Dr. Brigitte Miller presents the related symptoms and treatments available to women throughout the stages of life.

It’s estimated that 30% to 40% of all cancers are directly related to the foods we eat, the exercise we get and how well we watch our weight. Julie Lanford, registered dietitian and Wellness Director at Cancer Services, Inc., explains how we can make a major impact on our cancer risk.

Learn how advance directives, such as a living will and healthcare power of attorney, can ensure that your wishes be met. Carol Ford of Hospice & Palliative Care Center explains the terminology and procedures. Documents notarized free of charge.

View the quirky, dark comedy, “Jonna’s Body, Please Hold,” chronicling a cancer patient’s journey through cancer, and listen as a panel of cancer survivors share their personal experience with cancer. Box lunches provided. Video at 11 am followed by the survivor panel.

Head and Neck Cancer Screening
11 am to 2 pm 
WFUBMC oncologists and otolaryngologists provide a FREE basic head and neck cancer screening. Learn your risk for these cancers and how you can lower it. Appointment required.

Wednesday, September 10

PSA Screening
5 to 7 pm
Assess your risk of prostate cancer with a simple blood draw. Results mailed to your home in about one week. $25 fee. Appointment required.
