February is Heart Month at BestHealth

The Heart Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is sponsoring a month of free, informational heart-related events held at BestHealth in Hanes Mall, unless otherwise noted. Some events are reserved for BestHealth members only; for information on becoming a member, please call 336-765-8804.

Monday, February 2

Becoming Mindful: Nutrition, exercise & self-care
1 pm
Distractions and discouragement can sidetrack intentions to live a full, healthy life. Join Women’s Heart Health Coordinator Susan Butler, RN, for a discussion on overcoming barriers to making permanent changes.

12-Lead EKG Screening      FULL
10:30 am to 5:30 pm
Do you have a family history of early heart disease? Does your heart skip a beat? If so, you can have your heart rhythm checked with a 12-lead EKG. A Forsyth County EMS paramedic will review your results with you. Sponsored by Forsyth County EMS and WFUBMC Heart Center. Appointment required.

Chest Pain: What does it really mean?

Dr. Chad Miller from the WFUBMC Emergency Dept. shares what doctors are thinking when you complain of shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea and chest pain as well as tests you can expect such as a 12- lead EKG.

Join Chef Nikki Miller-Ka and learn how to incorporate soluble fiber, mono- and polyunsaturated fat and omega-3-rich foods into your daily meal plan. Recipes and samples provided.

Red Dress Fashion Show, Belk Court
6:30 to 8 pm
BestHealth, Belk and the WFUBMC Heart Center kick off Heart Month with this fun and engaging presentation of fashion and survival. Models ranging in age from the very young to the young-at-heart show off the latest fashions and share their stories of heart disease. Registration not required. Held in Belk Court at Hanes Mall. Registration not required.

Super Foods & the “New” Mediterranean Diet      FULL

WFUBMC registered dietitian Mary Martha Smoak and Susan Butler, RN, discuss the super foods of the food pyramid and how to best incorporate a heart-healthy Mediterranean diet into your daily nutrition.

Getting to Know Your "EF"
6 pm The term "ejection fraction" refers to the percentage of blood pumped out of a filled ventricle with each heartbeat. This measures the capacity at which your heart is pumping. WFUBMC cardiologist Dr. Vinay Thohan explains why ejection fraction is important, and what can be done to make improvements.

How well can your heart manage a six-minute walking test? Dr. Pete Brubaker of WFU Health and Exercise Science conducts FREE fitness testing and checks your body mass index (BMI) to indicate your risk for heart disease. Appt. required.

Physical Therapist Per Kristian Moerk of WFUBMC Sports Medicine evaluates your foot type and helps determine the most appropriate walking or running shoes. Wearing the correct type of shoe when starting a new fitness program helps prevent common overuse injuries. FREE. Appt. required.
